Premier League Reading Stars

Premier League Reading Stars

Encouraging children to read through a love of football.

Summary

We developed a child-focused interface to increase engagement and participation in the PLRS programme, and created a CMS which enabled site admin users to edit both English and Welsh content easily and efficiently, and to post new content to the site immediately.

In partnership with The Premier League, National Literacy Trust created the Premier League Reading Stars (PLRS) programme, encouraging 9-13 year olds to engage with reading through their love of football.

Brief

A learning platform which appealed to children and could be monitored by teachers.

We needed to develop a child-focused interface to increase engagement and participation in the PLRS programme, and create a CMS which enabled site admin users to edit both English and Welsh content easily and efficiently, and post new content to the site immediately.

PLRS wanted to improve accessibility across all devices to cater to a generation who were well-versed in multi-device browsing, as well as to help increase school subscriptions across England and Wales by being accessible on the move.

Results

1200+ schools participated across the UK
8000 pupils registered
60,000 challenges tackled over the 2015/16 season

Solution

A site where children learned through football and appealed to both boys and girls.

We delivered a vastly improved user experience across all devices. Both the children taking part and the staff within participating schools responsible for tracking their students’ progress found the system fast and easy to use, which is reflected by the high participant numbers.

Our child-centred design, which used aspirational, exciting imagery and clear labelling, appealed to the target age group’s preference for highly interactive content and allowed the development of an emotional connection between the project and the participants, whether boys or girls.

We added engaging, interactive secondary reasons for users to visit the site. These included league tables, games and quizzes, designed and implemented in such a way as to complement the NLT’s objective - encouraging children to return without detracting from the main messaging of the site.
